In order to register a company, and in many cases a business name, sole proprietorship or partnership in Canada you will be required to either provide a NUANS name search report or a name search report specific to that province.
These name search reports allow the government to ensure the name has not been taken by another business. Most provinces and territories take name granting extremely serious, as you should, because of the ability to market your business not only across Canada but across the World with the help of the internet. Having a distinct and descriptive name is very important.

What Types of Business Names Are There
A Business Name is the name under which an individual carries on business or the name under which a corporation carries on business other than its corporate name.
An individual carrying on business under his or her own name or under a different name, such as Joe’s Dry Cleaning, would be considered to be a sole proprietorship .
A corporation carrying on business under a business name, i.e. 2225522 Ontario Limited, carrying on business as Joe's Dry Cleaning, would be considered to be carrying on business under the business name “Joe's Dry Cleaning”.
Even though each has the same name they are actually two separate forms of registration. One is considered a Sole Proprietorship Registration the other is considered a Business Name Registration. Sometimes Business Names are also called Trade Names.
This section of the website deals with business names registered against companies. Refer to Sole Proprietorships for registrations done for individuals.
Almost every province and territory in Canada, including the federal jurisdiction, will require a company that is incorporated in that jurisdiction to file an annual return.
This is not the same as the company's tax return. An annual return is required by the Companies Branches of the provincial and territorial jurisdictions in Canada.
An annual return will request information about the registered office address, the mailing address, the business address, the directors, the officers and occasionally the shareholders of a company.
The provincial or territorial governments require companies registered under them to update their information on a yearly basis and most impose a small fee for the filing.
- Extra Provincial Registrations for Canadian Cos
Each jurisdiction will have a slightly different procedure, price and forms for incorporating a small business, . In order to determine how to incorporate in a particular Canadian jurisdiction you must check the appropriate Corporate Registry for the province in which the business will be operating.
When incorporating a small business in any country, state, province or other jurisdiction there will be a special procedure in that jurisdiction.
Certificates of Status
A Certificate of Good Standing is sometimes called a Certificate of Status or Certificate of Compliance depending on what jurisdiction you order it in. These certificates are ordered through service providers and issued by the government. All companies registered anywhere in the World can obtain a certificate of good standing for the jurisdiction in which they were incorporated.
In Canada companies can be incorporated federally, provincially or territorially. Therefore, if your company is registered in any one of those jurisdictions you can obtain a Certificate of Status for it.

What are the Different Types of Partnerships
